Gorman Heritage Farms, Asparagus, and the Catch-a-Fire Pizza Impact Team October Update

This month, our Catch-a-Fire Pizza Impact Team held our first volunteer event at Gorman Heritage Farm! It was a cold Cincinnati day, but we quickly warmed up while making an impact in helping to offer our time, hands, and positive attitudes to a neighbor farm in our community.

While there, we cleared out and prepared five asparagus beds for winter. We also learned that asparagus is a perennial plant that takes about three years to mature. Even though it was out of season, our Assistant People & Development manager, Mitch Bruns, decided to give it a taste, and tried it straight from the ground and said it wasn’t too bad.

Mitch also had more to say about volunteering: “This volunteer event gave me the opportunity to wake up early on a beautiful Fall morning and be inspired by the vegetables that grow each year that could easily be growing in someone’s backyard, if they choose to do so. Each time I volunteer I am afforded the opportunity to connect with nature, which is something I LOVE to do. There is nothing better than waking up in the morning and having the opportunity to learn, give back, and spend some time with the amazing team that is Catch-a-Fire. Shoutout to Jason, our amazing volunteer liaison for the opportunity to spend some time learning about the food we eat everyday, and to Brandi Gray, Catch-a-Fire Green Team Leader & Accounting Coordinator, for connecting us with these partners and giving us the opportunity to nourish the planet that we all walk on!” said Mitch Bruns, Assistant People & Development Manager.
